Gov. Corbett dishes sparing helping to Cherry & White
On March 8, 2011, after months of speculation, Corbett announced his budget cut plans for higher education. He is planning on cutting Temple University's funding by 50%. This will effect current as well as future Temple students drastically. While many students do not rely on government funding on school, many other students, like myself do.
I came to Temple as an out of state student, which meant i gave up all state funding from New Jersey. If I had stayed in NJ, i would have been fully funded by financial aid.
I gave that up to go to Temple, Where the tuition was double and my new financial aid package was less than half the years tuition. I did this to "invest" in my future. I went out of state to go through Temples Journalism program, to have that name on my resume as well as meet the contacts I would need to succeed in this field. I took on this burden of loans thinking that tuition would not change (much) during my two years at Temple, I was even expecting more in financial aid this year due to my newer "independent" status.
Now Governor Corbett may have ruined my investment, and made me waste a year at Temple. If I get less in financial aid this year, i will not be able to afford the difference after maxing out federal student loans. This may force me to transfer back to Jersey and have to restructure my curriculum to do this.
Temple students are scared-we should be.
Corbett should be investing money in the future, not cutting from it. When he retires, it is us, current college students that will be running the show. We need to be qualified and not angry about what our older population allowed to happen.

Everything Japan.....So Far
On March 11, 2011, Japan experienced a 8.9 earthquake, which also triggered a tsunami. Originally the death toll was expected around 1000, but now days later the number may be at 9000 or higher. Many people are still missing at this time, the search will still continue.
Northern Japan has been devastated by these series of natural disasters, and there is no safe bet on what there is to come.
Radiation has began to leak from nuclear power plants, since power was cut off to the plants after the tsunami. Electricity is needed to keep the coils cool to prevent nuclear meltdown.
Since the first tower caught fire, many people have been evacuated while others are being ordered to stay in their houses.
As this story develops, the death toll will certainly rise, and if a nuclear meltdown does indeed occur, this series of catastrophic events will be the most harmful and awful thing i have ever seen in my lifetime.

Kolb demand is on the horizon
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/blogs/birds-nest/Kolb-a-Valuable-Commodity-in-Todays-NFL-115567954.html
Kolb is now being called "the quarterback of the future" (QBOTF). The Eagles have 2 franchise worthy quarterbacks currently, Kolb and Vick. It is still unclear where Kolb will be next year. Teams like Arizona are interested, as well as any team that doesnot currently have their ideal player. Predictions of the demand will raise, after this years draft. The teams that do not get who they want in the draft will have to consider the young quaterback, since his projected potential is high.

Cuban Woman celebrates 126th Birthday!
http://www.comcast.net/video/cuban-woman-celebrates-126th-birthday/1778301368
Woman from cuba has just celebrated her 126th birthday. She has documentation to prove that she was born in 1885. She has not recieved the credit of being the oldest person in the world, due to misbeliefs that she is truely as old as she is.
The cuban government bought her a cake in honor of her special day, and she celebrated it with her large family, including her great-great grandchildren.
It is hard to believe that anyone can make it to that age, especially since the documentation is only a piece of paper, but I believe her. So I say, happy birthday Juana Rodriguez, lets make it to 127!

New food pyramid released Jan 31, 2011
The U.S. government has released a new food pyramid in efforts to promote a healthier lifestyle. This promotes things like exercise, portion control and keeping your plate as colorful as possible. It seems to be slightly similar to the Mediterranean food pyramid.
Below is a link to a picture of the new pyramid.

Snow still preventing Parking, tickets being issued
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Snow_Tickets_Philadelphia-115076359.html
Everyone that is driving in Philly has noticed the substantial lack of parking on the streets. With little parking available and snow covering the spots that are usually there, with no one around to clean up the snow drifts many people are parking where they can. The PPA is issuing tickets to people who park in front of meters.
It is Philadelphia's responsibility to clean the streets and make it available for transportation and parking. If parking is not available and people are getting tickets for not feeding the meters, the PPA should show lenience for an extended period of time.

Obama to Egypt: 'We hear your voices'
Obama to Egypt: 'We hear your voices'
After all the protests in Egypt, President Mubarak said earlier this evening that he will not seek reelection this september.
U.S. President, Barak Obama addressed the public this evening, stating that no country can determine egypts leaders, only egypts people can. Obama stated "An orderly transition must be meaningful, must be peaceful and it must begin now."
The people of Egypt hopefully will suceed in electing a leader that will have their best interest.

All About Laura Robb
I am starting a blog out of want, need and necessity. 1. I need to do this as a requirement for class 2. I know that it will only benefit my writing and ability to find and get news out to people 3. If I ever get good at blogging, I can use this to my advantage when I begin the job hunting process after college.
So who am I?
My name is Laura Robb, a 23 year old journalism student at Temple University. I was born and raised in southern New Jersey. I am the youngest of three children, and currently reside with my mother and my son. I am the truest example of a non-traditional student. I am a little older than my classmates, and a mother. This makes my drive stronger, but my obstacles far greater than the average student. I work full-time, go to school full time and am a full time mother. My busy life is challenging and exhausting, but succeeding is my only option, not just for myself, but for my child.
I hope to be able to learn what I enjoy writing about as well as further develop my news gathering skills.
I think that all for now. Thanks for reading and please come back soon!
